The Opportunity

Can you imagine if everything you decided to “do” came from how you had chosen to “be” and produced even more miracles in your life?

“You are a human being” (v. a “human doing”) is one of the three core concepts in the book Conversations with God.

If you only embody one concept, let it be this: if your experience is anything like mine, it will change your life. And show you your unlimited potential.

We begin here.

***

Before we departed on our trip to swim with wild dolphins, the trip leader told us the best way to have the richest experience with the dolphins:

  • Be openhearted
  • Let go of expectations

I converted this second action into “Be free of expectations” so I could have two simple ways of being while I traveled.

I wanted a “special” experience when we went swimming with dolphins in the Bahamas. Something extraordinary.

Initially, I envisioned it happening to me, personally. Remembering the power of connecting with the coyote on the mountaintop, I wanted to dive into the sea and feel transported by an up-close, intimate encounter with a dolphin. Feeling One, if only for an instant.

The second day of our trip, I followed a pair of dolphins. Swimming on my side, with my left arm outstretched beneath my head, I remained eye-to-eye with the dolphins, as we swam together, just us three. It felt exhilarating as the dolphins had slowed their pace to accommodate me, it seemed, then gradually accelerated, me kicking and breathing harder, peacefully, powerfully. I felt part of their pod for an instant, and it was bliss.

Yet then I suddenly wondered where the rest of our human “pod” was; all the other participants on the trip. I looked up and saw I had swum quite a distance from them. I felt badly and quickly swam to rejoin our human group.

The trip leader said when I returned that when one of us swims off with the dolphins that often takes the dolphins from the group.

As I reflected later on the experience, my special swim with the dolphins felt like a gift, yes, and somewhat hollow now. Not out of shame. I’d learned enough from reading the Conversations with God books now to know guilt and shame are futile emotions. Hollow was right. Not effusive, complete: whole.

Two days later, in my morning meditation, I played with a new vision: us all having an exceptional experience with the dolphins.

I felt myself as if it had already happened, such was the power of the meditation.

When I stepped out into the day, I told myself two things:

  1. Be how you’ve intended
  2. Believe

Any time I wondered what would happen that day out on the boat as we hoped to see dolphins and, even more, hoped to swim with them, I would remember the feeling from my meditation; how it felt when we’d all experienced this Oneness, if only for a moment. Sank into that and continued moving through the day with that sensation. And reminding myself periodically to be how I’d intended.

When we saw dolphins that afternoon, a leader of the WildQuest boat crew said the dolphins were acting very “peaceful.” We should mirror their behavior. Slip into the water quietly and stay together as a pod. “Powerful” was another word I’d heard to describe the dolphins’ current state as I walked toward my fins, mask and snorkel.

Our group reflected them as we relaxed in the water as a human pod. The dolphins swam among us, between us. Every person in the group reported later having personal, memorable encounters with the dolphins; some experiencing the dolphins swimming very close to them, making eye contact. The dolphins with our circle, our group.

“Pure magic,” our trip leader, Anne, said when we gathered together on the boat following the experience. She has led many whale and dolphin watching/swimming trips and was impressed by how each one of us had created this experience by how we had chosen to be, together: mirroring the dolphins in that moment.

“Magic,” indeed…

The Practice

  1. WORD. Select a word every day that reflects how you intend to “be” that day. Maybe you choose to be miraculous, powerful, compassionate, open, strong, kind. Whatever word you choose, I hope it is enough of a stretch for you to feel excited practicing it. What if you could embody this quality? This is coming…Stay with it.
  2. START. Start every activity that day from being this word. I like to start each day with 3 conscious breaths, while I’m still in bed. Then feel the word I have chosen to be that day, before laying my feet on the floor. This sets a tone for doing this before you begin each activity. Decisions? How would your word choose to respond to the choice at hand?

Neale Donald Walsch mentions a similar practice in his
Conversations with God, Book 1 Guidebook. And he invites you to select a different word for every day of the following week, planning your week of words in advance, then letting them direct the fabric of your day.

    This simple practice can be
    life-changing.

This is what I did on the boat in Bimini and have lived many of my days like this since.

This simple practice can lead to expansion and
enchantment; requiring only intention and commitment to produce extraordinary experiences, often.

    Especially when we:

  3. EVALUATE. Simple tooth-brushing or any other activity you do daily is a great time to reflect: How much did I live into that word today? What were some of the experiences touched by that word? Did I take a second to feel that word before I began walking? Meditating? Eating? Talking? Loving?

And how could I do this even better tomorrow so that, ultimately, I Be2Do Everything?

Four magic words that could change your life: Be2Do Everything.
